Closing the Prison Gender Gap: Examining Female Incarceration Trends

Thu, Nov 17, 7:15 to 8:15pm, Hilton, Grand Ballroom A, 1st Level

Abstract

U.S. state prison populations have risen dramatically since the beginning of the Crime Control Era. While the number of male inmates vastly outnumbers female inmates, female inmates now are a larger proportion of the incarcerated population than they were previously. This research examines the potential influence of policies that have led to this increase including mandatory minimum sentencing and potential net-widening crime control approaches.
