Punishing Juveniles as Adults: A Synthesis of Contemporary Findings

Abstract

Based on a rigorous synthesis of published findings, this project explores the effectiveness and viability of the “waiver” process of transferring juveniles to adult court. Although the process gained substantial support over the years, the mood of the nation and the U.S. justice system appears to be mixed, and the waiver process may be shifting among the states in regards to its popularity. This study provides updated information on the positives and negatives of the contemporary waiver process with a focus on its acceptance, usefulness, and relative success.
