Cross-Border Violence and Social Media

Abstract

The issue of cross border violence, specifically in Mexico, has not only become national issue in Mexico, but also a main focus throughout the United States. Cartel violence, which is significant part of the problem affecting Mexico, began to widely unravel in the early 2000. Since then, the number of kidnappings, missing people, bloodshed and homicides has increased. One of the peculiar dynamics to cartel border violence is the techniques used to recruit individuals to join their cause. For instance, social media is now a preferred method of recruitment by cartel members. This study will examine the use of social media in relation to recruitment strategies used by cartels. It will also include a content analysis of messages posted on various media platforms. Furthermore, criminological theories will be used to explain why certain individuals are compelled to join criminal organizations such as cartels. Finally, policy implications, in relation to cross border violence, will be discussed.
