Apple vs. FBI: Are People’s Perception between Security and Privacy in Line with their Political Stance?

Abstract

Using Tweet data on issues regarding the
FBI-Apple dispute, this paper seeks to examine
whether one’s stance on this issue can be
categorized as a political opinion. Result
shows that Twitter users from Democratic
States generally advocate for privacy more
frequently than users from Conservative
States. Although Tweets advocating for national
security are scarce, they tend to come
from Conservative States. Overall, the result
suggests that Twitter users’ opinion are vastly
different than that of the general public as evidenced by a skew toward personal privacy or
neutral Tweets.
