Teaching Race and Inequality in a Short-Term Immersion Experience

Thu, Nov 17, 9:30 to 10:50am, Hilton, Norwich, 3rd Level

Abstract

Recent decades have witnessed an increase in service-learning initiatives within higher education, including "alternative spring break" (ASB) programs that allow students to immerse themselves in a new locality to engage with social issues in a service capacity. This presentation reflects on a criminal justice professor's experience engaging with students from multiple disciplines on topics of race, crime, and justice during an alternative spring break trip to Chicago as a springboard for discussing the potential role of ASBs and other short-term immersion experiences in the pedagogy of racial inequality in criminal justice.
