Gender differences in Fear of Victimization

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the association between gender and perceived fear of crime in college students. The results of prior research suggest that females generally fear sexual assault far greater than males (Schafer et al. 2006, Fox et al. 2009). Surveys were completed by approximately 885 college students at three universities in the Northeast. Results of chi square and ANOVA tests indicate that there is a statistically significant gender difference in who is more fearful of rape by showing that females are more likely to fear rape than males. Implications of this research will be discussed.
