Identifying the Risks of Children of Domestic Violence

Abstract

Last year’s conference we presented research on domestic violence (DV) accountability courts. Through that research, a policy was born. This policy was created to implement DV accountability courts in every circuit in Georgia. We have had success with this policy. Several state representatives have begun backing the policy. Baby Talia’s Law will come up for a vote in 2017. In a continuation of our research we are looking at ways of treating the children of offenders. It is a well-known fact that most abusers were once abused. In light of this, we wanted to see if the classes we mandate in the accountability courts would be a successful way to treat children of offenders to prevent these children from growing up and becoming offenders themselves. In addition, we wanted to look and see if these classes would also help prevent these children from growing up and becoming victims again to other perpetrators. Another interesting point that deserves attention and research are the unsolicited victims that are approaching us through social media. Our poster will include research of children as victims of abuse due to indirect DV, and using social media as a facilitator to identify research subjects.
