An Examination of Social Movement in Latin America: A Divergent Hyperreality in Venezuela

Abstract

The appearance of Social movements tend to be a clear indicator that there is some type of discontent among a significant segment of the population with the current socio-structural order. “Contemporary societies abound with groups of people who organize attempts to promote or prevent change from taking place… Social movements are basic avenues by which social change takes place in societies… (Harper and Leicht. P. 133-134).” During the last 16 years, opposition strategies to the Venezuelan Socialist government have led to the development of unsuccessful social movements. However, a new movement emerged on February 2014 changing the Venezuelan history. This new movement exposes the real Venezuelan reality related to the current socio-economic status and the social media manipulation. Therefore, this movement stresses the fact that peaceful and democratic setting should be promoted to guarantee individual integrity and human rights. The purpose of this exploratory research is to examine the social impact of social movement in the global society. In addition, it will analyze conditional factors and data information from diverse sources to be able to identify variations in the socio-economic system that instigated the development, continuity, and evolution of this social movement behavior and a possible social change in society.
