Policing the Police

Abstract

This analysis examines the relationship between community conditions and police advisory complaints. We use neighborhood panel data to explore the nature of the relationship and focus on the ability of marginalized communities to supervise police. Our theoretical framework draws from aspects of social disorganization and collective efficacy theories to draw meaningful parallels between how communities supervise police and how they supervise traditionally conceptualized forms of crime and disorganization.
