Responding to Pillar Five of the President’s Task Force: Training and Education

Abstract

The President’s Task Force offers some excellent recommendations for training. We have also seen some well-intended programs designed to reduce bias, increase procedural justice, reduce force, and achieve other outcomes. However, to achieve these goals, training academies will need to devote more hours to selected topics, alter their pedagogical methods and establish proficiency standards at the individual level, among other changes. This presentation will discuss the challenges and barriers and make recommendations to increase the probability that training can produce significant changes in street-level attitudes, knowledge, and behavior.
