Comparative Analysis of the Literature of Muslim Inmates' Radicalization in Canada and the U.S.A.

Abstract

The radicalization of Muslims generally has become a focal issue in the societal narrative of North Americans. However, the issue is complex and multifaceted. Hence, it is essential to differentiate between the various forms of radicalization and attend to their particularities. This presentation looks at a singular form of Muslim radicalization, namely, prison radicalization both in Canada and the United States. This examination is organized in three parts. The first part provides a comprehensive literature review of academic and policy documents that deal with the issue of prison radicalization within Canada and the United States. Various electronic databases will be used to conduct this comprehensive literature review. The second part assesses and summarizes the literature review in terms of its research questions, methods, theoretical framing and results for both, Canada and the United States. Data organization and assessment will utilize narrative and document analysis methods. The third and final part of the presentation identifies future research and policy recommendations that can enhance our systematic knowledge of the issues pertaining to Muslims in Canadian and U.S. prisons.
