Abstract

Current understandings of prison gangs, formally known as security threat groups (STGs), are limited. This panel expands and updates current knowledge by exploring different facets of prison gangs throughout the US, including Arizona, California, Illinois, New York, and Texas. It discusses why and how STGs form, what STGs’ goals are, how members interact both in prison and on the street, the prison administration responses to STGs, and the consequences – intended and not – of these responses.
