Session Submission Summary

Public Health and Criminology: Integrating Approaches for Collaborative Success

Fri, Nov 18, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Hilton, Quarterdeck C, Riverside Complex

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract

In this session, three presenters with crossover experience in both public health and criminal justice will present successes, challenges and lessons learned. Attendees will hear about the benefits of approaching community violence from a public health perspective, the challenges of using a social determinants of health approach to address criminal acts of violence, and details about an on-going public health-criminology research venture to address human trafficking. Public health-criminology collaborations hold promise for addressing social problems, but capitalizing on the strengths of each discipline requires some reflection and purposeful planning in order to ensure smooth partnerships and project results.
