Roundtable: Towards an Anarcho-Punk Criminology

Abstract

The purpose of this roundtable is to discuss and develop the potential theoretical insight to be gleaned from an anarcho-punk criminology – an anti-authoritarian criminological perspective already existent among numerous scholars, yet until now, one which has remained largely implicit and unexplored. This session will consider the future terrain and distinguishing features of anarcho-punk criminology; and accordingly, provide new insights and perspectives on anarchism, resistance, punk rock countercultures, social harm, criminology, criminal justice systems, and the understanding of crime as a social construction that reifies hierarchies and benefits the powerful. This perspective also challenges accepted methodological approaches by centering auto-ethnographic, edgework, and other critical methodologies in analyses of crime, deviance, and social control. All are invited to attend this roundtable which welcomes domestic as well as international perspectives that can potentially bridge disparate views on these topics. The discussion is intended not only for people who come from an anarcho-punk perspective, but also for those interested in learning more about this approach, particularly emerging scholars. Ultimately, we intend for this roundtable discussion to lead to a future edited book manuscript and various additional publications and collaborations.
