Contemporary criminological research demonstrates that cues of deterrence and social control reduce offenders’ probability to initiate and pursue criminal events. Unfortunately, most recent studies on system trespassing ignore these insights, and focus solely on the technical aspects that may prevent, detect, or simply tolerate system trespassing events. Addressing this empirical gap, we report findings from a series of studies aimed at exploring system trespassers’ reactions to surveillance and other situational stimuli during real-time trespassing events. Drawing on criminological theories and unique data collected by our interdisciplinary and international research team, we assess the effectiveness of situational stimuli in a compromised computer system on the development and progression of system trespassing incidents.
