Intervening for Children’s Violence Exposure: Findings from the National Evaluation of Safe Start Promising Approaches

Abstract

Children’s exposure to violence is relatively common and can lead to problem and delinquent behaviors, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and academic issues. Despite systems of care to support children exposed to violence, and some emerging innovations in intervention, the evidence base for such programs is still small. The goal of this panel is to present findings and perspectives from an evaluation of the second phase of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention’s National Safe Start Promising Approaches (SSPA) initiative. The initiative focused on reducing the impact of children’s exposure to violence through behavioral health interventions in diverse communities across the United States. The first paper presents an overview of the SSPA initiative and its evaluation, summarizes violence exposure among study families, examines changes on key outcomes, and assesses intervention effectiveness across the sites. The second paper presents data on study enrollment, retention, and power, and shares the results of the analysis on the effectiveness of the intervention on key child-level outcomes. The third paper describes the successes and challenges the Denver Safe Start experienced during implementation with a focus on law enforcement strategies for engaging and retaining youth in the intervention.
