Intergenerational Transmissions and Danish Registry Data

Abstract

This panel offers a brief introduction to Danish registry data, showcases four examples of how these data may be exploited for empirical analyses, and then our discussant places both the data and the results from the individual papers in a broader context. By exploiting full population panel data from Denmark (Danish registry data)—which may be merged at the individual level within and across generations—the papers in this session all address important empirical questions in criminology which could not be answered using most other data sources. Using these high quality data, three of the four papers use policy changes to obtain unbiased estimates of intra- and/or intergenerational consequences of incarceration, and one paper describes how family dynamics transmit incarceration across three generations.
