Policy Panel: Guns at the Intersection of Criminology and Public Health

Abstract

Thousands of Americans are murdered with guns every year and tens of thousands more are injured; this violence is a concern of criminology but also of public health. This panel explores opportunities for research and intervention with a foot in each discipline, and strengthens communication between the two fields. Our panelists, a mix of researchers, practitioners, and policy experts, exemplify this approach. Members of our panel have researched the public health impacts of changes in gun laws, developed and applied new ways of measuring laws related to gun crime, and acted as practitioners wielding a wide spectrum of public policy tools to achieve safer communities on the ground. Our discussant is the research director of Everytown for Gun Safety, an organization committed to reducing gun violence through rigorous research and evidence-based policy.
