The Pedagogy of Justice: Student-Faculty-Community Collaborative Engagement in Justice Research/Scholarship in New Orleans

Abstract

New Orleans is known for many things such as Mardi Gras, great food and Jazz. However, it is also known for its many social problems and justice issues – after all, it has been described as “the city that care forgot!” What many may not realize is that it is also a “community of care,” which offers a vast array of social service agencies and organizations. The city’s universities, especially Loyola University New Orleans, have a remarkable record of community engagement with students and faculty contributing 1000s of hours every semester in justice work. This session features several teams of professors, students, and community partners who will present results of their collaborative work in various social service agencies that address justice issues in the City of New Orleans and greater metropolitan area. Presentations include studies and analyses of the costs of chronic homelessness; human trafficking and exploitive labor of youth; the misuse of prescription stimulants, depressants and opioids among students; and sex offender policies and community implementation issues.
