Migration and Human Trafficking: A Cultural Criminology Approach to Crime Construction and Representation

Abstract

In line with the theme of the 2016 ASC conference – “The Many Colours of Crime and Justice” – the proposed panel aims to present papers that examine the fluidity of criminal definition and the processes of crime construction and representation.
The panel will discuss the issues of media framing of human trafficking for sexual exploitation, and implications of such stereotyped representation. It will further discuss the economic and judicial consequences of the criminal stigma attached to the non-local hukou citizens, whose numbers remain overrepresented in official crime data in China. Finally, the panel will take a look at the phenomenon of crimmigration in Malaga, analysing the punishment of irregular migrants through the use of detention and deportation.

Topics within the panel emerge from a consortium of four internationally recognised research centres: University of Kent (England), Utrecht Universiteit (Netherlands), Universität Hamburg (Germany) and Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary). One of the missions of this unique partnership is the examination of these issues – and others – using a critical interdisciplinary study of both social science and law-based dimensions of criminology.
