Federal Approaches to Measure Police Use of Force

Abstract
This panel will describe federal approaches to quantify and describe incidents of police use of force in the US. The presentations will provide results from the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ (BJS) Police Public Contact Survey on public perceptions of nonfatal use of force by police, describe federal databases in development at the BJS and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to collect information about police use of force and arrest-related deaths, and explore the utility of data collected by state agencies to measure the outcomes of use of force investigations. The unique contributions of each of these federal approaches to measuring the prevalence and circumstances surrounding police use of force will be discussed.
