Innovations in Correctional Healthcare for the Aging and Serious and Chronically Ill in Prison

Abstract

There is a growing awareness among scholars and practitioners of the high needs and costs of health care in prison, especially among an aging and seriously ill population. This interdisciplinary panel of health, social service, and criminal researchers and practitioners will describe new research findings and practice innovations that address the health care needs and costs of people in prison at the national and state level. Panelists will discuss new findings from a Pew Charitable Trusts funded national survey that examined the health needs and costs of people in prisons. Other panelists will discuss their collaborative practice innovations in prison treatment and care transitions with the serious and terminally ill eligible for medical parole and compassionate release in New York State.
