Abstract

The goal of NIJ’s Comprehensive School Safety Initiative is to improve the safety of our nation’s schools and students through research that yields practical knowledge. To advance this initiative, NIJ works closely with thought leaders in the field of school safety, including both scholars and practitioners from across the nation. NIJ commissioned scholars to review the research literature and write papers summarizing evidence in a variety of areas related to school safety. Concurrently NIJ held a meeting with representatives from state school safety centers to hear about the challenges they face in protecting students and schools. This panel will discuss NIJ’s research efforts in school safety, present evidence summaries from school safety scholars, and include a state school safety practitioner as a discussant.
