Research on Innovative Strategies to Promote School Safety

Abstract

This panel presents three ongoing studies of innovative strategies to promote school safety. Two of the studies are funded under the NIJ Comprehensive School Safety Initiative and the other is a large national evaluation of the President's Now Is The Time initiative funded by SAMHSA. Two studies are focused on school-based efforts to improve student mental health, well-being and resilience, key factors in improving school safety and climate. The third study seeks to better understand what school districts are currently doing to control students’ behaviors on the school bus, one of the leading locations for bullying and school violence. All three studies are led by researchers at RTI International; the panel will seek to highlight and encourage discussion of issues and themes common to the three studies.
