Factors Influencing Interpersonal Violence and the Criminal Justice Response in Tribal Communities

Abstract

This thematic panel will present and discuss recent research examining the impacts of the recent oil and gas boom in North Dakota on intimate partner violence and related issues, the legal and institutional challenges facing those tasked with responding to these problems, as well as the impacts of the oil and gas boom on community quality of life for members of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation; factors that predict police decisions to refer for prosecution sexual assault and sexual abuse of a minor cases that involve Alaska Native victims and suspects, and that occur in Alaska’s tribal communities; and understanding the unique operational challenges of tribal justice systems.
