Session Submission Summary

Enforcing the Border: Criminalization, Fear and Detention in the Age of Punishment

Thu, Nov 17, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Hilton, Grand Salon 9, 1st Level

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract

The recent increasingly punitive immigration policies have resulted in the detention and deportation of an unrepresented number of immigrants. This thematic panel will address the consequences of these policies, including the expansion of a legal category that has been responsible for the leading cause of deportations from the U.S., the crippling effects of the fear of deportation on the lives of immigrants, an examination of the conditions of immigrant confinement as a reflection of culture of vindictiveness within the U.S. in the neoliberal era, and a look into the world of those who are leading the movements against immigrant detention.
