Longitudinal Data Release: Causes and Correlates of Delinquency and Northwestern Juvenile Project

Abstract

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) is pleased to announce the release of landmark longitudinal data sets focused on how at-risk youth and juvenile justice system involved youth progress through adolescence into early adulthood. Under the Program of Research on the Causes and Correlates of Delinquency, researchers on the Pittsburgh Youth Study, the Rochester Youth Development Study, and the Denver Youth Survey instituted data collection in 1987 with repeated contacts with nearly 4,000 inner-city youth considered at high risk for involvement in delinquency and drug use. Under the Northwestern Juvenile Project, over 1,800 youth held in Cook County (Chicago) juvenile detention have participated in repeated interviews since enrollment in the study in the late 1990s. Data from these four studies are being made available for secondary analysis through the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD). This panel provides an overview of the studies, highlights of the unique opportunities for analysis, and guidance on how to access the data in the NACJD secure enclave.
