Exploring Substance Use with the Rochester Youth Development Study: Session I

Thu, Nov 17, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Hilton, Steering, Riverside Complex

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract

This is the first of two thematic panels which features research on substance use stemming from the ongoing Rochester Youth Development Study (RYDS). Studies which examine individual risk factors associated with the onset and prevalence of substance use are numerous. However, fewer studies have examined the mediating mechanisms which condition the relationship between these individual risk factors and subsequent substance use, while fewer still explore the mediating role of parents in this regard. Utilizing three generations of familial panel data collected by the RYDS, the papers featured on this panel examine the role of parents as risk factors for and protective factors against the development of substance use in their children.
