Thu, Nov 17, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Hilton, Quarterdeck A, Riverside Complex

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract

Through its Comprehensive School Safety Initiative (CSSI), the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is building a portfolio of research and evaluation on a broad range of school safety topics. NIJ offices focusing on the social sciences and on science and technology contribute to this initiative. This panel will introduce the initiative and provide presentations on progress and results of the national Survey of Law Enforcement Personnel in Schools (a Bureau of Justice Statistics effort), the creation of a database on completed and averted attacks on schools, and an assessment of the use of technology to prevent and respond to school violence. The discussant brings over three decades of experience as a national leader on school safety and will help to illuminate the relationship between federal programs, policies, and research and school safety at the local level.
