NIJ: Research and Evaluation on Firearms

Abstract

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is a long-time sponsor of research to build knowledge that helps to understand and reduce firearms violence. The first discussion includes a review and discussion of NIJ’s firearms violence social science research portfolio over the last 25 years, summarizing the social and behavioral research at NIJ, as well as the advances in technological research. Following, an NIJ Physical Scientist, Mark Green, will provide an overview of NIJ’s research related to smart guns, and introduce two current NIJ grantees to present on contemporary projects related to 1) an evaluation of gunshot detection technology, and 2) an evaluation of California’s efforts to recover firearms from individuals who are legally prohibited from possessing them.
