Wrongful Convictions, CODIS, and Sexual Assault Case Processing: Findings from the Urban Institute’s Forensics Research Portfolio

Thu, Nov 17, 9:30 to 10:50am, Hilton, Grand Ballroom D, 1st Level

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract

This panel will present findings from three Urban Institute research studies focused on the role of forensic evidence in criminal case processing. Using various qualitative and quantitative methods, Urban has examined how to measure how “hits” in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) provide information to case investigations, the extent to which forensic information and case characteristics are associated with wrongful convictions, and the role and usefulness of sexual assault medical forensic exams in sexual assault case processing. This panel will describe each of these studies, highlight key findings, and provide lessons learned for the field of forensic research.
