Session Submission Summary

Critical Approaches to Sex Crime and Sex Offending in Law, Policy, and Reform Movements

Thu, Nov 17, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Hilton, Starboard, Riverside Complex

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract

This panel offers a critical examination of sex crime and sex offender laws and policies. The panelists reveal the "many colors of injustice" and the un/intended consequences of current criminal justice approaches to sex offending, trafficking, and commercial sex. Papers explore the net-widening effects of social movements pushing to expand the reach of the criminal justice system and the treatment industrial complex to manage and control people convicted of sex offenses; to crack down on commercial sex by expanding the category of "sex offender"; and to "rescue," protect, and rehabilitate victims of trafficking and sexual exploitation.
