Roundtable: When Men Murder Women

Abstract

This roundtable will include three papers based on evidence arising from the Murder in Britain study. The study was designed to examine different types of murder. It includes two main sources of data: 866 case files of men and women convicted of murder; and 200 in-depth interviews with men and women currently in prison for murder. The main purpose of this roundtable is a focus on three main types of murder of women (n=243): intimate partner murder (n=105), sexual murder (n=98) and murder of older women (40). Using qualitative and quantitative evidence the papers focus on the Murder Event and the Lifecourse of perpetrators in the three types and suggests important difference. Additionally, comparisons are made between the murders of women and the murders of men (n=424). Each of the papers also consider issues of conceptualization, methodology and research procedures associated with conducting research on homicide, particularly the murder of women. The three year study produced unique evidence and is considered within a gender based explanation of the murder of women.
