Roundtable: Mentoring Students--From Orientation to Graduation, and Beyond

Abstract

Mentoring is an important part of teaching, whether we teach graduate or undergraduate students. It is important when advising on curriculum choices and suggesting career ideas, but can be more critical at when suggesting how to navigate peer and political pressures in academia. For graduate students, having a faculty mentor might mean the difference between a graduate with a successful career chart and one lost. We recognize the necessity for proper implementation of mentor programs and will discuss what that would look like. Finally we will give examples of student mentoring programs and the assessment of those programs, as well as how to create a successful mentor/mentee relationship.
