Roundtable: International Co-Operation for the Development of New and Radical Responses to Women in Criminal Justice Systems

Abstract

This roundtable offers a forum for deliberation about the development and implementation of innovative responses for women under criminal justice supervision. Facilitated by academics, journal editors and activists, this roundtable invites participation from conference attendees interested in international cooperation around this issue. The roundtable will use two documents to frame this conversation: The Corston Report (2007) - A Report By Baroness Jean Corston of A Review Of Women With Particular Vulnerabilities In The Criminal Justice System - and the UN Bangkok Rules (2010). The Corston Report describes women’s experiences with criminal justice systems in the UK. The UN’s Bangkok Rules, (2010) provides recommendations female correctional systems worldwide, including the development of non-custodial sentences for women in criminal justice systems. Roundtable discussion will consider the progress that has been made to date in response to these policy documents, with a focus on the development and provision of alternatives to imprisonment for women in criminal justice systems. Specific strategies, including publication and activist responses, that can further generate interest and discourse about alternatives to custody will be deliberated. The goal is to help build evidence-based pathways towards responding effectively to the needs of women who have been convicted of breaking the law.
