Roundtable: Resisting Victimization and Defending the Self

Abstract

Can, and should, women resist male attackers? And do women need to use guns to resist effectively? This roundtable will explore such questions drawing on material from three researchers involved in different studies on women’s use of self defense measures. It will address arguments advanced against teaching women physical self defense as well as considering the importance of non-physical tactics that can be employed in self protection. Following introductory remarks from three presenters, the fundamental theme driving the discussion will focus on the importance of utilizing a range of measures to challenge dominant narratives depicting women’s vulnerability in order to promote a discourse reflecting women’s agency, resistance and empowerment.
