Roundtable: The Importance of Gerontology to Criminology--Understanding the Elderly as Victims and Offenders

Abstract

Criminologists have embraced a newly emergent subfield of criminology referred to as “Gerontological criminology” or “Gero-criminology”. Several individuals researching and practicing in fields of criminal justice, criminology, and social work/gerontology held a roundtable at the ACJS 2016 annual meeting. In the roundtable, titled “Gerontological criminology (gero-criminology): Emerging new field,” they discussed their perceptions of the issues that will be important in gero-criminology moving forward. This roundtable is a continuation of that discussion. In particular, the group will share their views on the state of gero-criminology in terms of research and teaching, and question boundaries and the value of evolving issues in this extremely relevant subfield. The potential for a newly formed “Division of Gero-criminology” will also be discussed.
