Roundtable: Drawing Lessons and Learning From a Merseyside Based Police Service and University Co-Production Research Partnership

Abstract

The collaboration between Liverpool John Moores University, the Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner, and Merseyside Police under the banner ‘Embedding Evidence Based Practice in Public Protection and Crime Prevention’ represents an attempt to situate research activity at the core of practice development. The project seeks; 1) to build capacity amongst police officers to understand and use research; 2) to embed engagement with contemporary criminal justice research to promote evidence-based problem solving; and 3) to innovatively share and implement findings through knowledge exchange mechanisms across all levels of policing. The roundtable brings together academics and police practitioners involved in the project to reflect on how the ambition of these objectives is being realised and to identify/share learning from working in a co-production relationship. The project team are a multi-disciplinary blend of Advanced Police Practitioners (seconded from Merseyside Police) and research active University staff who, working collaboratively have jointly developing training, manage practice-based research and facilitate knowledge transfer around the overarching priority of Supporting Victims, Protecting Vulnerable People and Maintaining Public Safety. More specifically the project engages with, and delivers upon, the following priorities; child exploitation; effective crime prevention; hate crime; with the theme of cyber-crime cutting across all areas.
