Abstract

This research is part of a broader study about the police investigation, prosecution and treatment of male stranger rapists. This type of sexual offences is the most difficult to investigate for the police. In order to increase the solved cases, we have analysed more than 600 police investigation files of male stranger rape. Our final objective is to build a classification tool to guide the criminal investigation in this kind of cases. So we conducted an exhaustive review of the literature on criminal profiles and police performance statistics in order to design a data collection sheet to gather the information from the police files, including victim characteristics, geographic variables, offender behaviour information, etc. The main goal of this paper is to compare the behavioural profile of the single-victim rapists, serial sex offenders and group sex aggressions. In this communication we will discuss the results obtained to the date and the methodological issues arisen in the construction of the strange rapist profiles.
