Roundtable: Rethinking Pretrial Practice and Building a National Research Agenda for the Front End of the Criminal Justice System

Abstract

It is well-established that what happens at the front end of the criminal justice process affects every point thereafter. With this in mind, the Prisoner Reentry Institute of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, with the generous support of the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, convened two national roundtable discussions on pretrial practice. The roundtables invited academics and practitioners to explore what is known, and what is not known, about the front end of the criminal justice system. In fact, the second roundtable had a specific focus on developing a research agenda to address the questions that those conversations had raised. The two roundtables are highlighted in reports issued by the Prisoner Reentry Institute (http://johnjaypri.org/category/research-and-publications/). This roundtable session, facilitated by Jeremy Travis, will bring together participants from those two discussions to talk about their own research while reflecting on the broad contribution that academics can make to further develop the field of pretrial practice.
