Session Submission Summary

Roundtable: So I have a PhD in Criminal Justice...Now What?

Wed, Nov 16, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Hilton, Pelican, Riverside Complex

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

Stemming from a 2015 article by Robert J. Sternberg, “Career Advice from an Oldish Not-Quite Geezer,” and statistics on the number of people of color within full-time faculty in degree-granting postsecondary institutions (6 percent were Black, 5 percent were Hispanic, and 10 percent were Asian/Pacific Islander), this discussion will draw upon the reflections and career experiences of women whom obtained their terminal degrees within five years. As women, women of color and first-generation graduates, we reflect upon our position in society and how it has defined our teaching philosophy and career journey. The roundtable will also explore the differences between working in academia, the private sector and how to negotiate and integrate our new identity.
