Abstract

Piper Kerman and Layda Negrete will speak about their activist work for criminal justice reform including the ways they use the media through television, documentary film, and writing to advance their efforts. Kerman will discuss her work related to criminal justice reform in the United States based on her experiences, her memoir about her time in a federal prison (Orange is the New Black), and the television series based on this book. Negrete will discuss her advocacy, research, and criminal justice policy reform work in Mexico including co-producing the award winning documentary film Presumed Guilty. This panel will provide a comparative perspective on approaches to advocating for criminal justice reform and using the media to advance such efforts.
