Abstract

Justice Deer's presentation focuses on the high rates of violence against Native women and children, emphasizing how federal Indian law has damaged tribal sovereignty. She discusses the history of violence in Indian country as well as contemporary efforts to effect social change through grassroots advocacy. Justice Deer, a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) nation, is an associate justice (Prairie Island Appeals Court) professor of law, legal advocate, and recipient of a 2014 McArthur Fellowship.
