A Tribute to the Scholarship and Spirit of the Late Nicole Hahn Rafter

Abstract

The discipline of criminology lost one of its great voices with the recent passing of Nicole Hahn Rafter, though her contribution continues. Nicky is well-known nationally and internationally for her original, critical, and eclectic body of work rooted generally in the areas of feminist criminology, cultural criminology, and comparative and historical research. Her many books and articles address an array of topics including gender and prison history, biological theories of crime, representation of crime in popular culture, genocides, and the development of criminology as a discipline. She received the American Society of Criminology’s Sutherland Award in 2009 in recognition of these outstanding contributions over the course of her long career, and remained engaged in cutting-edge work since then. Her latest book The Crime of all Crimes: Toward a Criminology of Genocide (NYU) was published this year. This session was organized to acknowledge Professor Rafter’s many contributions to the discipline of criminology through scholarship, teaching and mentorship. A panel will discuss contributions in key areas and the session will provide an opportunity for audience members to remember her and reflect on her contributions to criminology and beyond.
