Defining and Measuring "Definitions": A Further Test of Social Learning Theory

Thu, Nov 16, 8:00 to 9:20am, Marriott, Room 501, 5th Floor

Abstract

Akers’ Social Learning Theory is one of, if not the, most accepted theories in criminology. It has been widely tested on a variety of subjects, and crimes by Akers and his colleagues, as well as others. In this paper we add to this large literature by exploring the concept of “definitions”. We draw on specifically Akers’ work and symbolic interactionism to explore its meaning. We use vignettes to explore additional methods of measuring this illusive but interesting concept.
