Broken Doors: The Impact of NYPD Search Warrant Raids on Police Legitimacy

Wed, Nov 15, 5:00 to 6:20pm, Marriott, Room 404, 4th Floor

Abstract

Militarized search warrant executions are critical incidents exposing both police and civilians to danger. Public experiences of search warrant raids were explored in a qualitative phenomenological study using in-depth interviews with a sample of residents of New York City homes raided by the New York Police Department. Content analysis identified salient variables for measuring the impact of home raids on perceptions of police legitimacy. The results shed empirical light on these controversial incidents and their impact on police-community relations. Directions for further study and implications for policy are discussed.
