Abstract

This paper is systematically invigorating analysis of President Trump’s sovereignty security attitude in an era of unprecedented globalization and global threats. It focuses particularly on the threats posed by the newer wave of transnational crime activities in the ever-increasing global environment. It cannot be refuted that globalization has brought about certain benefits to the people of the world, such as enabling easier access to international trade, foreign direct investment (FDI) and the spread of technology, particularly in the communication industry, which have reduced the wide world into a global village. Contemporaneously however, threats like transnational crime activities have also globalized with rapidity both in dimension and intensity than ever before and thereby posing serious challenges to national security of virtually all nation states. The focal question therefor is, can the newer waves of transnational crime threats posed by the unprecedented processes of globalization be effectively and adequately contain with a sovereignty security attitude as President Trump’s pronouncements seem to suggest? In this analysis, serious issues have been raised and adequate efforts made to address them and important lessons gleaned in the process—these are lessons that might be too important and too costly to ignore in the 21st century global environment.
