This paper utilizes in-depth qualitative content analysis to document the social constructions of both gender and intimate partner violence found in hit country music before and after the passage of the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 (VAWA). The functional relationship between music and law is examined through lyrical contexts which gender roles, hegemonic masculinity, alcohol abuse, and, most importantly, violence against women.
