Experiencing Probation: More Lessons from the HOPE DFE

Abstract

What happens to probationers over the course of their tenure depends upon the supervision conditions, local policies, and, of course, individual behavior. During the Honest Opportunity Probation with Enforcement Demonstration Field Experiment evaluation, extensive data were collected on where individuals were—street time, jail days, residential treatment days, or prison days—to construct a state history, including durations in each state. The timing of arrests, violations, and deaths were also recorded. These histories provided detailed information on the variability among individual experiences of the probation experience. To visualize these data, the horizontal line plot was used and stratified by group and site to examine site and group differences. Results from transition analyses and a competing risk survival analysis with state as the outcome and time as (one of) the independent variable(s) are presented.
