Crime Trends in U.S. Cities: Academic and Practice Viewpoints.

Abstract

This paper reports the results of an effort to examine contemporary trend data from select U.S. cities. Drawing upon data provided by the Major Cities Chiefs, this work captures significant observations and potential causes and correlates gleaned from a recent gathering of academics and practitioners at the Homicide Research Working Group. Issues noted include, but are not limited to, prevalence of gangs, guns, drugs, social disorganization, trust in police, clearance rates, and other widely held notions as to the root causes (if any). The contours of these debates and glimpses pertaining to the future of these trends are also provided.
